Course Description

This course provides a thorough look at prescription sunwear and rimless eyewear, giving opticians the knowledge they need on UV protection, material choices, and the latest technologies. Participants will learn about the effects of UV exposure on eye health, new advancements in lens and frame materials, and techniques for customizing eyewear to meet individual needs. We’ll also cover smart sunwear technologies, polarization, photochromics, and the specific care and maintenance required for rimless frames. By the end, opticians will be ready to guide patients toward eyewear solutions that focus on eye health, suit their lifestyles, and offer lasting value.

Course Objectives

  • Analyze the effects of UV exposure on ocular health and the protective role of prescription sunwear.
  • Identify suitable materials and coatings in sunwear and rimless eyewear, balancing comfort, durability, and visual performance.
  • Distinguish between lens options like polarization, photochromic lenses, anti-reflective treatments, and blue light-blocking technologies for enhanced visual comfort.
  • Describe emerging smart sunwear technologies and their integration of digital features with sun protection.
  • Assess lens and frame options suitable for high prescriptions in rimless eyewear and apply best practices for handling and maintenance.
  • Apply specialized fitting techniques for both wrap and rimless eyewear to enhance patient satisfaction.
  • Educate patients on UV protection, lens technology options, and best practices for maintaining their specialized eyewear.

Course Assessment

There is a 40-question test at the end of the course. A successful passing score of 80% is required on all ABO-NCLE continuing education courses in order to earn the designated number of credits. You will know your grade instantly after completing the course.
