No, Connecticut opticians cannot take online continuing education courses so OTI is not an approved provider.


What is the Optician Development Program approved for in Connecticut? 

At this time, ODP is not approved in the state of Connecticut for apprenticeship alignment. The program can be taken for training and ABO-NCLE exam preparation purposes only.


What are the requirements to become a licensed optician in Connecticut?

Optician Licensing Requirements

  1. Hold an associates degree in ophthalmic dispensing approved by the Connecticut Board of Examiners for Opticians OR have completed at least 4 years and 8,000 hours of apprenticeship training under the supervision of a licensed optician. Apprenticeship training completed in Connecticut will be accepted provided the applicant was duly registered as an optician apprentice by the Department.
  2. Successful completion of the following examinations:
    1. The American Board of Opticianry & National Contact Lens Examiners’ (ABO-NCLE) National Opticianry Competency Examination (NOCE) and the National Contact Lens Registry Examination (NCLE)
  3. A DPH administered practical examination

What exams are required in Connecticut to become a licensed optician?

Passing of the National Opticianry Competency Examination offered by the American Board of Opticianry (ABO) is required.

Passing of the Contact Lens Registry Examination offered by the National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) is required.

Passing of the state practical examination.
