Course Description

Dry eye disease (DED) and contact lens-induced dry eye (CLIDE) are among the most common challenges encountered in contact lens practice. These conditions can impact patient comfort, visual performance, and long-term contact lens success. This course reviews the underlying mechanisms of dry eye disease, differentiates DED from CLIDE, and explores modern diagnostic tools, treatment strategies, and contact lens options that support successful wear. Participants will gain practical knowledge on lens selection, fitting modifications, care systems, and ocular surface therapies that improve patient outcomes.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between dry eye disease (DED) and contact lens-induced dry eye (CLIDE).
  • Identify common causes, risk factors, and clinical signs associated with dry eye disease.
  • Describe diagnostic methods used to evaluate dry eye and ocular surface health.
  • Compare contact lens modalities and materials used for patients experiencing dryness.
  • Recognize and utilize management strategies that support successful contact lens wear in dry eye patients.
  • Assess how DED and CLIDE influences contact lens selection and performance across soft, corneal GP, scleral, and orthokeratology modalities.

Course Assessment

There is a 40-question test at the end of the course. A successful passing score of 80% is required on all ABO-NCLE continuing education courses in order to earn the designated number of credits. You will know your grade instantly after completing the course.
