Brief Course Description
Working With Premium Lenses
Premium lens materials have made their way into mainstream use, requiring that
optical personnel be familiar with their properties and the best ways to work with them
effectively. Considerations in handling these materials go beyond proper surfacing and
finishing techniques. High-index materials are often packaged with special coatings,
including anti-reflective, scratch-resistant, hydrophobic and oleophobic. In addition,
many other premium lens attributes, such as progressive addition lenses (PALs), aspheric
or atoric, polarized and photochromic, are often employed with high-index materials. In
addition, the combined popularity and relative fragility of drilled-rimless mountings
dictates that high-index materials will be frequently employed.
