Conjunctival and Episcleral Injection
Episcleral injection is a nonspecific manifestation of an inflammation of the conjunctiva. It occurs when the conjunctival vessels become �red.� Contact lens wear can be the cause episcleral injection in the following circumstances: The result of allergic or toxic reactions to various contact lens solutions. Infectious conjunctivitis, although this is generally coincidental and is rarely due to contact lens wear. Alterations in the integrity of the corneal epithelium which can be caused by direct trauma or by exposure related hypoxia and dessication.

 

Episcleral injection may be graded according to its degree of severity as shown above. The vessels are concentrated in the perilimbal area and are dusky red in color.
