Introduction
In this session we will cover the actual shape and design of prescription
ophthalmic lenses. In doing so we'll discuss spheres and radius of curvature.
Modern day corrected curve lenses will then be discussed along with
the rationale for the use of the commonly recommended base curves. The
importance of routine use of the lens clock will be emphasized followed
by a discussion of cylindrical shapes and their use in prescription
ophthalmic lenses for the correction of various astigmatisms both by
themselves and in combination with spheres. The power cross will be
covered to aid in determining the power of a compound lens in its various
meridians and to gain a better understanding of lens transposition.
Finally, vertex distance compensation for higher powered lenses will
be discussed.
